CALL FOR ABSTRACT 12THGHUCG TRACK 16: DIGESTIVE DISORDERS
The digestive system, which is comprised of the gastrointestinal tract (GI), liver, pancreas, and gallbladder, aids in the digestion of food. Important for the conversion of food into nutrients that the body uses for energy, development, and cell repair.
Some digestive disorders and conditions are acute and short-lived, while others are chronic and persistent.
Digestive disorders span a wide range of minor to severe ailments. Gastroesophageal reflux disease, cancer, irritable bowel syndrome, lactose intolerance, and hiatal hernia are common digestive problems.
The most frequent digestive disorder symptoms are bleeding, bloating, constipation, diarrhoea, acid reflux, discomfort, nausea, and vomiting. To accurately diagnose stomach issues, a complete medical history and physical examination are required. Some individuals with digestive issues may require more comprehensive diagnostic treatments, such as endoscopic procedures, laboratory tests, and imaging.
Five common digestive system illnesses include:
- Inflammatory bowel syndrome (IBS)
- Irritable bowel disease (IBD)
- Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)
- Celiac disease
When do digestive disorders become serious?
Symptoms lasting longer than 2 to 3 days may indicate more serious health issues, such as infection or inflammatory disorders, such as inflammatory bowel disease. The most common symptoms are nausea and vomiting.
