Gastroenterology

Gastroenterology is the study of the normal function and diseases of the esophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon and rectum, pancreas, gallbladder, bile ducts and liver.

Gastroenterology is the branch of medicine that focuses on the digestive system and its disorders. It involves the diagnosis and treatment of diseases and conditions affecting the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, which includes the organs from the mouth to the anus involved in the digestion and absorption of food. Gastroenterologists use various diagnostic procedures, including endoscopy, colonoscopy, imaging studies, and laboratory tests, to assess and diagnose conditions of the digestive system. Treatment options may include medications, lifestyle modifications, dietary changes, and, in some cases, surgery.

Gastroenterology Disease Types

Gastroenterology diseases include strictures, stenosis, hemorrhoids, constipation, liver cirrhosis, hepatitis, irritable bowel syndrome, stomach cancer, pancreatitis, gas, Crohn’s disease, lactose intolerance, diverticular disease, colon polyps, colon cancer and inflammatory bowel disease.

Role of a Gastroenterologist?

Gastroenterologists diagnose and treat digestive problems such liver disease, ulcers, IBS, and cancer. Typically, the gastroenterologist will ask about your symptoms and perform an exam to determine if they notice anything out of the ordinary.

The diagnostic process helps the gastroenterologist determine what is causing your problems. They will decide on your treatment when they have made a diagnosis. Medication, surgery, or referral to another specialist may be necessary.

What to expect at a Gastroenterologist Visit:

You could see a gastroenterologist in a hospital, clinic, or private practise. You may need a referral from your primary care physician depending on your insurance.

The gastroenterologist will interview you and conduct a physical examination. Typically, you will lie on the table, with the doctor pressing down on the outside of your stomach. They will feel for anything out of the ordinary, inquire if it hurts, and listen for peculiar sounds.

A gastroenterologist may refer you for additional tests or diagnostic procedures such as a colonoscopy or upper endoscopy, which both use small cameras to allow the doctor to see inside your digestive tract. Following a diagnosis, the doctor will discuss your treatment options with you.

Some people only see a gastroenterologist once or twice if they have an acute (emergency) condition. Others may require regular doctor visits to address chronic diseases like inflammatory bowel disease.
