CALL FOR ABSTRACT 12THGHUCG TRACK: GASTROENTEROLOGYÂ
What is Gastroenterology?
The study of the normal function and diseases of the oesophagus, stomach, small intestine, colon and rectum, pancreas, gallbladder, bile ducts, and liver is known as gastroenterology.
Gastroenterology is a branch of medicine that deals with the normal function and diseases of the digestive system as a whole, which includes the oesophagus, stomach, gallbladder, pancreas, liver, bile ducts, small intestine, large intestine (colon), and rectum. A gastroenterologist, or doctor who specialises in this field, is well-versed in the normal physiology of the organs mentioned above, as well as the proper motility of the gastrointestinal tract. Furthermore, he must be able to advise patients on the importance of maintaining healthy digestion and metabolism, nutrient absorption from food, and the prompt removal of metabolic waste.
Gastroenterology Disease Types
Gastroenterology is a broad field of medicine that encompasses all diseases of the digestive system. Colon cancer, constipation, acid reflux, diarrhoea, liver cirrhosis, hepatitis, haemorrhoids, irritable bowel syndrome, stomach cancer, pancreatitis, gas, Crohn’s disease, lactose intolerance, and other common diseases
What Is the Role of a Gastroenterologist?
Gastroenterologists diagnose and treat digestive disorders such as liver disease, ulcers, IBS, and cancer. Typically, the gastroenterologist will begin by learning about your symptoms and performing an exam to see if they can see, hear, or feel anything out of the ordinary.
The diagnostic procedure assists the gastroenterologist in determining what is causing your symptoms. They will decide on your treatment once they have made a diagnosis. Medication, surgery, or a referral to another specialist may be required.

What to expect at a Gastroenterologist Visit:
you could see a gastroenterologist in a hospital, clinic, or private practise. You may need a referral from your primary care physician depending on your insurance.
The gastroenterologist will interview you and perform a physical exam. Typically, you will lie down on the table with the doctor pressing down on the outside of your belly. They’ll feel for anything out of the ordinary, ask if it hurts, and listen for unusual sounds.
A gastroenterologist may refer you for additional tests or diagnostic procedures such as a colonoscopy or upper endoscopy, which both use small cameras to allow the doctor to see inside your digestive tract. Following a diagnosis, the doctor will discuss your treatment options with you.
Some people see a gastroenterologist only once or twice if they have an acute (sudden) problem. Others may need to see a doctor on a regular basis to manage chronic conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease.
