CME & CPD ACCREDITED 14TH WORLD GASTROENTEROLOGY, IBD & HEPATOLOGY CONFERENCE

CALL FOR ABSTRACT 14THGHUCG TRACK 24: GASTROINTESTINAL IMMUNOLOGY

Why Perform a Test for Gut Immunology?

With digestion being one of the most important functions of the body, diseases in the gut or gut health issues can lead to secondary complications. That is why doctors recommend to get a complete gut health check done to test the gut microbiome and overall performance.

The Gut Immunology test assesses two important biomarkers for gastrointestinal (GI) inflammation and immunology, providing information on the GI tract’s interactions with and responses to the external environment. They reflect how well the GI tract is performing its barrier function and whether the GI tract is exhibiting negative responses to external or internal stressors. Interactions between the immune system and the GI tract are becoming increasingly important, not just for GI function and health, but also for the health of the body as a whole.

Evaluating the complimentary biomarkers eosinophil protein X (EPX) and calprotectin provides clinicians with crucial information regarding the immune responses in the gut and can also be used to evaluate the patient’s response to therapy.

Beneficial for Patients Experiencing:

  • Diarrhea
    Cramps
  • Nausea
    Fever
  • Vomiting
  • Symptoms of fatigue that fulfil the criteria for Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), such as:
  • Recurrent abdominal ache or pain
  • Variation in faeces frequency
  • Variation in stool shape Food intolerance

Bowel Inflammatory Disease (IBD)

Abstract Submission Form

The Gut Immunology test examines the immune response in the gut by assessing two biomarkers, calprotectin and eosinophil protein X, using a simple stool sample collected at home (EPX). Calprotectin is extremely sensitive for assessing inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract and distinguishing between IBS and IBD. EPX is secreted as part of the immunological response to injury to the intestinal lining, such as that caused by a food allergy.

How does the digestive system aid the immune system?

The gastrointestinal tract (GI tract) has two functions in human physiology: digestion and nutrient absorption, and the more difficult duty of maintaining immunological homeostasis (protecting the body from potentially harmful microbes, while inducing tolerogenic responses to innocuous food, commensals and self-antigens).
