This field combines principles of neurology, gastroenterology, and other related disciplines to understand how the brain and gut communicate with each other and how this communication affects GI function and disorders.

What is a neuro GI?

Neurogastroenterology focuses on the relationship between the nervous and digestive systems. One critical gastrointestinal (GI) function affected by the nervous system is motility, the coordination of muscles that move food through the digestive tract – from swallowing to defecation.
